GIROLLE PICKING - ANGDOO.COM/BLOG

Mattie and I spent our Christmas holiday with Mattie’s family in the South of France. In between many Christmas lunches and dinners full of oysters, foie gras, meat, bûche de Noël and me trying to speak French, we squeezed in one of my favorite activities – girolle picking.

Girolle or chanterelle is the most loved mushroom in France. Girolle picking sort of became our regular activity whenever we visit Mattie’s dad. He knows some secret spots in the forest, and he is also a master of finding these rare mushrooms.

Sometimes we don’t find any and sometimes we find a lot, but either way I love it.

To be honest, I’m not a good mushroom hunter (yet). Often, Mattie’s dad or Mattie spot them and point them to me. Then I get very excited to pick them like a little kid : ) It still puzzles me how anyone can spot a tiny golden thing in between all these fallen leaves.

I also get distracted by other things I find, like this giant mushroom.

GIROLE PICKING - ANGDOO.COM/BLOG

Mattie’s dad took us to the forest where we can find girolle mushrooms, also known as chanterelle. Girolle is highly priced in France, and it is everyone’s favorite mushroom (at least in between the Frenchies I’ve met so far). I’ve never tasted or saw one until I came to France, and yes, it is good.

Since we came down to south of France, we had the mix of rain and sun, which I’ve been told as a good condition for girolles to grow. So one afternoon we drove into the woods to the Mattie’s dad’s secret spot for girolle picking. Last two times I went there in previous years, I had no luck and didn’t find any. Nevertheless I had fun both times exploring the forest, so I was excited to go again.

Mattie’s dad goes often for girolle picking during the season, and he is and dressed like an expert.

Mattie’s little brother and sister came along.

But before we went into the forest, we got sidetracked by picking blackberries. Some still tartly and some super sweet.

Once we got into the forest, it was covered with these purple flowers.

A knife is a necessary tool if you want to pick girolle like a pro. Mattie gave me this knife as a present last year, and I carry it around everywhere with me since. I don’t have much use while living in the city, but when we travel to the countryside, it finally shines.

So the search began. Third time’s the charm, and we started to spot golden mushrooms poking through the wet pile of leaves.

Another edible mushroom we found.

Also I ran into few other good looking mushrooms. But the rule of thumb is not to touch them if you don’t know them.

We had plenty for the dinner at the end. I stuck my head in the basket to take in their fruity smell. And I was satisfied : )

Me, proudly holding the basket full of girolles.

That evening, they were sautéed with chopped garlic and cream, and happily wend down to our bellies. Oh, I was satisfied once more.

SUMMER 02 / PAINT ON WALL- angdoo.com/blog

We are well into 2016, and I sincerely wish you all the best. After over stuffing myself during the Christmas season in Bordeaux with Mattie’s family, I was quite happy to return home and pick up my daily life where I left off. So as soon as I got back, I delved right into several personal projects – finishing up a short film, producing a tea towel collection, building shelves in the hallway, thinking about a upcoming exhibition, etc etc etc. This is when I should tell myself, one thing at a time! ; )

This is my first post of 2016, and perhaps it should be about my resolution or something along that line, but for me, start of a year is just a continuation of the year before. I don’t or at least try not to give too much importance to it. So I’m going to share my summer pictures which I’ve been meaning to share for a while now.

After our tandem trip, Mattie and I went down to Aureilhan, a small village next to Mimizan, for a few days to help Mattie’s mom renovating her farm house. Besides the renovation, we went mushroom hunting around the house and found gigantic mushrooms. You should know how much I love mushroom picking if you’ve read my other mushroom hunting adventures : ) Then we mowed the grass field on a tractor. We also painted around what used to be a place to cook up food for the pigs.
