Sun sun sun in Marseille. Always.

After the residency in La Patronne early this year, I spent a few days in Marseille before returning to Paris.

Eating navettes sort of became a must whenever I go to Marseille. I haven’t seen them anywhere else but Marseille, and they are so yum! These are from Four des Navettes who have been baking navettes since 1781!

On the return day to Paris, while eating french fries waiting for the train, I realized I forgot my laptop at my friend’s house. The train was leaving in a few minutes and my friend was returning home only in the evening. So Mattie and I had to miss our train and were forced to stay one more day in Marseille. Not knowing how to spend a whole extra unexpected day in Marseille, we walked to the seaside, laid down, got comfortable and watched seagulls.

It was our bonus day <3

We had another adventurous moment the morning after at the train station. We left our luggages at the train station when we missed our train, but when we got to the locker room in the morning, we learned that its opening hour was after our train time (panic). We were lucky to find someone to beg and able to access our locker just in time for the train, but people, always check the opening hours before you lock your stuff away! Lessons learned ; )

Marseille, I squint my eyes only by thinking about it.

Autumn has arrived in Paris already, and I dream of hot pre-summer spent in Marseille. It was in April this year or was it May when spontaneously Moderne Jazz family joined in Marseille. It was sunny and hot and all good feelings everywhere for a week.

NEW ZINES AND NEW BOOK / FOTOKINO - angdoo.com/blog

While Mattie and I were having our AMATEURS exhibition at Straat Galerie this past spring, Studio Fotokino was also having an exhibition showcasing several interesting small edition companies. I was happy to visit such a cozy place full of sunlight and nice books and zines. Let me share with you what we picked up.

This zine, called <B – R – Y>, is by Corners Publishing in Korea. It is a very simple technical risograph color chart, yet is so satisfying to look at.

The second half of the zine is placed upside down. I believe this is a mistake, but it made me smile nevertheless : )

The second one <Spectres> is by Roméo Julien and printed by FP&CF. This riso printed zine definitely needs to be seen and touched in person to really appreciate it. You will know what I mean when you get to hold one in person ; )

This last book <A Catalogue of Constant Motion> is by Amanda Marsalis, published by Automatic Books. It is a riso printed book of polaroid photos Amanda Marsalis took over the years. The layout, the paper texture and four color riso print all come together so nicely.

AMATEURS EXHIBITION / STRAAT GALERIE - angdoo.com/blog

Let me give you a little tour of our current exhibition at Straat Galerie in Marseille : )

This exhibition, titled AMATEURS which is also the duo name of Mattie and I, is the outcome of our two-week residency from end of April to beginning May. Only idea we took with us to Marseille was the idea of making a very VERY thick book of quick sketches. First four or five days of our residency were dedicated to drawing. Mattie and I would sit next to or in front of each other and just drew and discussed about the exhibition. Then we created a few rules of our exhibition:

  1. Draw many many sketches.
  2. Ask friends to choose their favorites.
  3. Turn the selected sketches into sculptures.
  4. Name each piece after the friend who chose the sketch.

We ended up drawing more than 1600 sketches, which we hand bounded into a book of 3200 + pages, and 11 big and some bigger wall pieces named after our friends.

The opening of the exhibition was a part of PAC (an annual contemporary art festival in Marseille) and  l’Année France-Corée 2015-2016 (the year of France and Korea sharing their cultures through events, performances, exhibitions, etc), so many people visited from art walks and group tours.

Under are some photos from professional photographers who took some photos of our exhibition.

ISHEM ROYER FRIDA / GALERIE ASSOCIATION D'IDÉES - angdoo.com/blog

Ishem, Royer and Frida are friends whom we hung out with, helped us with our exhibition and went painting with when we were in Marseille. We are all in a same crew, Moderne Jazz, and we are good buddies. But friendship aside, I’ve been a great admirer of their graffitis ever since I started painting on walls.

I was excited when I first learned of their group exhibition at Galerie Association D’idées in Marseille and that I would there to see it in person as our exhibition aligned with theirs.

The show was titled <Le Retour Des Beaux Jours> which translates to ‘the return of the beautiful days.’ They showed paintings, stitchings, needle feltings, stone engravings, wood works and some zines. There are so many details which you have to see in person. Sadly, the exhibition ended last week, but here are some photos for those who missed it.

PAINT ON WALL / MARSEILLE - angdoo.com/blog

Many friends of Moderne Jazz live in and near Marseille. Because we were so occupied with our exhibition, we couldn’t find time to go painting. Luckly on the last day in Marseille, we went for a quick rushed painting before Mattie and I had to run to catch the train back to Paris.
