I bought this book <ATLAS DE POCHE DES PLANTES DES CHAMPS DES PRAIRIES & DES BOIS> from Maison Empereur in Marseille (the shop should be visited if you are ever in Marseille!).

This book is a reproduction of what was originally printed at the end of 19th century, therefore some texts are outdated. But owing to that, it is a beautiful book. This book in particular is about plants, however there’s a book about other topics – mushrooms, fish, birds, butterflies, etc – within the series. You can check the whole series here (click on “curiosités naturelles”).

This is titled <CAVALE>, a collection of Idir Davaine‘s landscape paintings. Paintings are so abstract which makes me wonder what its real landscape might of looked like. Going through the paintings, it gives me an itch to go chill in nature, or start painting landscapes. You will understand when you see the book in real.

I also very much like the book’s format and the layout with the colored edge.

Always extra nice when you get a dedication from the artist : )

Maybe I should try painting landscapes hehe. But for now, you can check out more of Idir Davaine on his site and Instagram. And more info about this book here.

NEW ZINES AND NEW BOOK / FOTOKINO - angdoo.com/blog

While Mattie and I were having our AMATEURS exhibition at Straat Galerie this past spring, Studio Fotokino was also having an exhibition showcasing several interesting small edition companies. I was happy to visit such a cozy place full of sunlight and nice books and zines. Let me share with you what we picked up.

This zine, called <B – R – Y>, is by Corners Publishing in Korea. It is a very simple technical risograph color chart, yet is so satisfying to look at.

The second half of the zine is placed upside down. I believe this is a mistake, but it made me smile nevertheless : )

The second one <Spectres> is by Roméo Julien and printed by FP&CF. This riso printed zine definitely needs to be seen and touched in person to really appreciate it. You will know what I mean when you get to hold one in person ; )

This last book <A Catalogue of Constant Motion> is by Amanda Marsalis, published by Automatic Books. It is a riso printed book of polaroid photos Amanda Marsalis took over the years. The layout, the paper texture and four color riso print all come together so nicely.

SAEIO 2009-2014 / ÉDITIONS PEINTURE - angdoo.com/blog

Good news during the holiday season – the very first book from Éditions Peinture <SAEIO 2009-2014> is finally out!

If you are new to Éditions Peinture, Saeio or <SAEIO 2009-2014>, here’s the back story. About two years ago, Mathieu Julien and Guillaume Pellay, two good friends who share a great passion for art and graffiti, came up with an idea of making a series of books which archive the works of unconventional graffiti writers. This led them to form a none-profit publishing company called Éditions Peinture. After selecting their first graffiti writer, Saeio, whose work I also greatly admire, and spending many months preparing, they successfully crowd funded last May to raise funds and to pre-sale the book.

So fast forward to now, the book is here! It is a 300-plus-page-book which thoroughly archives Saeio’s work from 2009 to 2014 with an interview in the back (both in English and French). It also comes with an essay written by Joëlle Le Saux. The book is beautifully made with a minimal layout, a cover which folds out to a poster and a transparent binding which I love very much.

The book can be ordered through their webshop, which also sells posters and fanzines by Gsulf, Akbar and Saeio (which I blogged the making-of several months ago). If you are still in search for a belated Christmas present, this might be a good place to look ; )

DANS UN JARDIN / BY ATAK - angdoo.com/blog

Look what’s new in my house – DANS UN JARDIN by ATAK. It is a beautiful book, full of textures and colors.  Every page has little surprise flaps which you can flip to reveal what’s hiding behind them. With this slightly over-sized book on my lap, I instantly became 5 year-old again, giggling through every page and little flaps.

ATAK is a German artist/illustrator based in Berlin. I became his fan when I first came across his book <Targets for the Modern Home> a few years ago. His paintings have so many layers that I’d love to see his painting process.

SAEIO 2009-20014, THE BOOK / CROWDFUNDING - angdoo.com/blog

Mathieu Julien (my man whom you may know as Mattie) and Guillaume Pellay (my good friend) are artists who share a big passion for graffiti. Therefore, they started up a non-profit publishing company, Éditions Peinture, to publish books and essays which explore graffiti as paintings.

One big series they are brewing up is the “Archives” collection, which each book documents the years work of one graffiti writer along with an interview. The first book of the series archives the work of SAEIO from 2009 to 2014. Saeio (PAL crew) is one of the most original and interesting graffiti writes of now.

Éditions Peinture has been working on this book for a year, and they just launched the crowdfunding site to make this book a reality. You could pre-order the book, buy Saeio’s fanzine, poster, silkscreen, drawings to support them.

Please check it out, support and share with your friends :)

A few days before my birthday, Mattie took me to a bookstore around the corner from ours and bought me ‘Le petit Nicolas‘ as a pre-birthday present. We saw the Le petit Nicolas series displayed on the bookshop window a few weeks back, and Mattie thought it’d be a nice book for me to read to learn French. Then I realized for the first time that Le petit Nicolas is from France. When I was little and still living in Korea, I vaguely remember my older brother buying the Korean version of this book, 꼬마 니콜라, whenever my mom took us to a bookshop. I was not much of a reader when I was young, and don’t remember reading the series. But more than 20 years later, I got a copy of Le petit Nicolas in French.

Even though it is a children’s book, I am pleasantly surprised how much I can actually understand when I read the first couple of chapters. But I still run into so many words I don’t know, and I end up asking Mattie every few minutes. Many would be annoyed after a while, but Mattie tells me the meaning of each word every single time. Yes, he is very patient, especially with me, which I am very thankful : )

Written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Jean-Jacques Sempé, it is refreshing to enter such a naive, honest and simple world of a child, petit Nicolas.

So far, most of the chapters end with “un coup de poing sur le nez” which means, a punch on the nose. This makes me giggle every time, and wonder why I didn’t read Le petit Nicolas when I was little.

A book (or my 3ds) accompanies me on my metro rides (if I’m not on my bike). This is the book going around with me for the last few rides: Romance by Blexbolex. I got to know his illustration works only about three years back, and his illustrations are simply beautiful and timeless. I also adore his other books, ‘Seasons’ and ‘L’imagier des gens.’ The latter book won the “Best Book Design of the World” prize. You can also learn French words with these books ; )
