Mattie and I selected our favorite drawings from the tall drawing book we’ve made for our exhibition at Straat Galerie last year, scanned them, and put them together into a zine.

Mattie and I spent some time in LA over Christmas and New Year’s. We spent half our time there eating Chinese with my family and the other half helping out my friends who were setting up a new cafe B TWENTYFOUR. They also run a deli and bottle shop The Heights which Mattie designed the logo and sign painted its exterior almost two years back. Mattie once again designed a logo for B TWENTYFOUR and made the signage for the business. And this time we also got to make some art pieces to decorate their beautiful high ceiling interior.

We made a series of paintings on fabric, which we cut, sew and painted.

We flew back to Paris before it opened, but B TWENTYFOUR is now open. So the locals, go visit, grab a coffee (or horchata latte which I really want to try!), enjoy the sign and the paintings and let me know what you think ; )

POSTCARD / AMATEURS - angdoo.com/blog

A few months ago, some students of Camberwell College of Art illustration students have contacted me. They formed a collective Deltio to fundraise for their upcoming show, and they wondered if AMATEURS could participate in their original postcard sale event.

I always get flattered and surprised when someone knows AMATEURS. Mattie and I are both not very interested in actively promoting our works (or we are just not very good at it), hence our Facebook page is not very active, and we never even considered creating an Instagram account for AMATEURS. Only up-to-date online presence we have is of our website, which in current time standard, not enough online presence. Some may call it lazy (and I agree), but for now, I prefer it this way for several reasons. But that is a whole another topic ; ) So back to the story, I was flattered when Deltio wanted us to participate.

Mattie and I made the postcard a week before we went to our art residency at Straat Galerie in Marseille. This was when we were playing with the idea of making a big sketchbook for the exhibition and testing how to tear the papers. So you could call this postcard the test version of our sketch book shown at our exbibition.

AMATEURS EXHIBITION / STRAAT GALERIE - angdoo.com/blog

Let me give you a little tour of our current exhibition at Straat Galerie in Marseille : )

This exhibition, titled AMATEURS which is also the duo name of Mattie and I, is the outcome of our two-week residency from end of April to beginning May. Only idea we took with us to Marseille was the idea of making a very VERY thick book of quick sketches. First four or five days of our residency were dedicated to drawing. Mattie and I would sit next to or in front of each other and just drew and discussed about the exhibition. Then we created a few rules of our exhibition:

  1. Draw many many sketches.
  2. Ask friends to choose their favorites.
  3. Turn the selected sketches into sculptures.
  4. Name each piece after the friend who chose the sketch.

We ended up drawing more than 1600 sketches, which we hand bounded into a book of 3200 + pages, and 11 big and some bigger wall pieces named after our friends.

The opening of the exhibition was a part of PAC (an annual contemporary art festival in Marseille) and  l’Année France-Corée 2015-2016 (the year of France and Korea sharing their cultures through events, performances, exhibitions, etc), so many people visited from art walks and group tours.

Under are some photos from professional photographers who took some photos of our exhibition.

AMATEURS UPCOMING EXHIBITION / STRAAT GALERIE - angdoo.com/blog

Mattie and I are heading south to Marseille tomorrow for the next two weeks to prepare for our exhibition at Straat Gallerie. I’ve never been to this gallery before, but it has already exhibited some of our good friends in the past – Alexis Poline, Guillaume Pellay, Frida, RoyerIshem, FEO, L’outsider.

This will be our second show under our duo name AMATEURS.  The experience of preparing and exhibiting our first solor show at 126 Galerie in Rennes last year was unique and special, especially to a person who is new to making art and exhibiting. And I feel fortunate to be invited to make another show. Our show will be a part of this year’s 8th Printemps de l’Art Contemporain, also known as PAC, an annual contemporary art festival in Marseille. And as I am a Korean-born, our show is also a part of l’Année France-Corée 2015-2016 (the year of France and Korea sharing their cultures through events, performances, exhibitions, etc), and I am proud : )

We have a lot of work to do for the next coming two weeks, but I hope the sun will be out so we can swim at least once in the crystal clear blue water I’ve seen in so many pictures. Can’t wait!

Oh and if you are in or around Marseille, come see us on our opening day on May 5!

BEHIND THE STORY / RESIDENCY AT GALERIE 126 - angdoo.com/blog

Early September, already more than a month ago, Mattie and I arrived at Galerie 126 in Rennes to prepare for our Amateurs exhibition. The following ten coming days, we lived in a grand humongous house adjoining the gallery space. I’ve already posted the photos of the exhibition, but I thought to share those ten days before the exhibition, which in many ways is more special for me.

When Galerie 126 first asked Amateurs to exhibit there, I was very flattered. Mattie had done many exhibitions before, however it was first for me. It’s been only two or three years since I started making some art pieces as a side fun, and I only dreamed of doing a show maybe in the far far away future. So I was pretty thrilled.

For those who don’t know Galerie 126, it is a house-turned-art-residency and a garage-turned-art-gallery in Rennes. Four loveliest boys in town – Toto, Louis, Hugo and Quentin – who live and run the gallery, invite artists from all over the world to stay with them for a few weeks and have an exhibition at the end of the stay.

Yup, it is quite a special place with special people : )

There are two cats there. This is Luke, the coolest cat I ever met. Strangely I don’t have any photos of Buba, the three-legged-half-tailed-cat, who is equally cool and oh so soft with a touch of sassiness (strange because I take photos of every animal I encounter).

Amateurs’ first solo exhibition kicked off like the film above. Giant flags Mattie and I made during our 10 day residency at Galerie 126 were hung high, and we turned the gallery into a mikado play room, decorated with small sculptures. If you have already passed by the gallery to see our show and played a game of mikado, I’m flattered. If you haven’t because you are too far away from Rennes, here is a little tour for you.

AMATEURS OPENING TONIGHT / 126 GALLERY - angdoo.com/blog

Mattie and I of AMATEURS have been living in 126 Gallery in Rennes for the past 10 days, preparing for our very first solo exhibition. We’ve been making giant flags and giant mikado. We still got many things to do, but the opening is tonight! Hence, this will be a quick post.

AMATEURS OPENING TONIGHT / 126 GALLERY - angdoo.com/blog

Here is the text (in French) written by our good friend Guillaume Pellay about us for the exhibition (translated by his good friend Donnie Ka).

Bordeaux, Troyes, Paris ; Seoul, Los Angeles, Treviso, Amsterdam, Paris ; we’re gonna have to clear things up a bit before we start talking about Rennes.

Mathieu Julien and Jin Angdoo, amateurs ; Jin Angdoo and Mathieu Julien, amateurs. It’s crazy : it works both ways. Let’s start from here then, from what brought them together in Paris, as a tandem, like this vehicle which carried them from bivouacs to duck soups these past few summers, on the roads of Southwestern France.

The rest of the year, they share an appartment : the theater in which their little enterprises take place. It asks for a rigorous organization – it’s always the case in exiguous parisian spaces. Mathieu and Jin paint and cut, sew and dye, borrowing technics and machines here and there. They engage in long and repetitive tasks with craftsman-like patience and a certain savoir-faire, based on a blend of handymen common sense, pure observation, and Youtube tutorials. They design various items, not mere sculptures or paintings. Our Amateurs are not petty amateurs, but people who got rid of this adjective and freed from this qualification, a qualification too often summoned as a gross opposition to the science of professionalism.

Each time, their project is directed toward a finished object. The Amateurs share a common appreciation for plain shapes, for colors clashing in big shades, for abstract compositions spawning a need for contemplation. They share a sharp sense of harmony, of trimmed details. For them, it seems like the « how » is as important as the « why » : the constant need for thinking, learning new technics, and shaping, is inherent to their dynamics. Mathieu will write texts with a photosensitive mixture or create compositions with felted wool onto jumpers. One day, Jin will write a choreographed piece for colored rocks, small enough to fit between her fingers. The next day, she will sew large cotton flags, almost bigger than herself : banners without ideology, only spreading the beauty of their own composition. Together, they create tote bags, each of them unique, made of hundreds of shapes, cut in cloth and pieced together.

Their art fits in a household environment,. They float between two worlds, originating both in art and craftsmanship. In that sense, their approach is a reminder of the 19th century Arts & Crafts movement in Great Britain : people who tried to bring art and daily life together by working on furnitures and everyday objects, creating the idea of design in the process.

The 126 is a group of friends with an incredible energy, all living in the 126, avenue Général Leclerc in Rennes, a huge house that gave them their name. 126 is also the name of the gallery they set up in their garage, where they’ve been curating amazing events and exhibitions for more than two years now. By inviting Amateurs, the Galerie 126 is definitely establishing a rule : every re-opening in September will be the time for a Moderne Jazz exhibition. This past summer, Mathieu and Jin also did a voice-over for a short documentary about this team of graffiti artists they’re part of. It was produced by Arte Creative TV. In this video, Jin speaks a perfect english, way too natural to be faked : it comes from her childhood, spent somewhere in the vastness of Los Angeles. As for Mathieu, he spent his youth in Bordeaux, and it’s a bit less obvious.

In Rennes, they will present a body of work that will clearly exceed the usual space of exhibition. Precise and ambitious works, way too precise and ambitious, even, not to overshadow the modesty of their authors : Amateurs.

If you are in Rennes, join us tonight for the opening and a game of giant mikado : )

POP / AMATEURS TOTE BAGS - angdoo.com/blog

Finished! Mattie and I were busy (and our house was a mess) finishing up our Amateurs project to create a collection of tote bags. We call them POP !

POP / AMATEURS TOTE BAGS - angdoo.com/blog

We worked on this project on and off for a few months now. It all started from Mattie and I questioning the projects we do under Amateurs. Here is what we said about this project during our interview with Sight Unseen a few months ago:

Our next project, which we are working together on, derives from our ongoing discussion about the status of Amateurs’s website, which is a blur between an online exhibition and an online shop. Its ambiguity comes from the fact that many of the artworks we present there are made out of common materials. We like the aesthetic of simple everyday objects, and we find them interesting to work and play with. Therefore these artworks can be seen as decorative or designed everyday goods. Yet in fact, by our intervention, we change their status and function.
For instance, when Jin made a series of paintings on tea towels, which is a complete and original painting series, she changed their status as they most likely won’t be used to dry dishes anymore. However, this gesture also didn’t turn them into complete art pieces. The status of tea towels became rather ambiguous, and we like to flirt with those boundaries.
For our next project, to try the contrary, we want to hand-produce a series of canvas tote bags without changing their function nor their status when finished. Each tote bag will be hand-crafted and thus each will be unique, however their value and function will remain the same. As we develop this project, there’s something exciting about producing objects which people are going to use in the end.

After lots of cutting and ironing and unsewing (the handles) and sewing (back the handles), we’ve made 73 heavy weight cotton tote bags with multicolor handles. Designs are made of fabric cutouts, and every bag is one of a kind.

A FLAG FOR EVERY HOME / FLAG 07 - angdoo.com/blog

Finished and shipped off the commissioned flag to LA. I was occupied to ship it to the family as quickly as possible after finishing it, so I forgot to take any other photos than this.

I’m always a little nervous and embarrassed to sell my art pieces. And I feel the same now. I wonder how this will hang in their dream house which they’ve just moved into.

You can see some photos of the process here.
