TORPEN - ANGDOO.COM/BLOG

Hi you! I just received my second assignment for my ongoing personal project called GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT. You don’t know what GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT is? It is an ongoing personal project I’ve invented to ask my favorite creatives/people to give me an assignment. And it is an open call for anyone to join in and do the assignment with me : ) You can read up this post for more information.

So let me introduce you the second assignment giver,Torpen. He is an artist, a graffiti writer and a friend from Brest, France. We are in a same crew called Morderne Jazz and often paint on walls together. He is one of my favorite graffiti writers, and I have learned and continue to learn a lot from him.

I’m very happy that he gave me (us) an assignment. A very interesting one.

Voilà my proposition, three assertions, in three steps to my assignment:

In the whole World, in a lot of cultures we find practices of second skin, disguise, costume, in ceremonial ways, parties or even in daily life. It can be made and used in folk events, pop events or in personal or marginal ways, not always accept by the mass people.

Definitely more than me you are (by your education and life, and so by your senses and minds) at the crossroads of several cultures, from America, Asia, Europe (here I don’t want to generalise a culture to its whole continent, but you know).

Definitely you are smaller than me by the size*, today you are perhaps one head below me. * Sure, I’m not the only one, you are not the only one.

I would like you to think of a way, by costume, to become one head over me at the end.

I’d be happy if you joined in to do this assignment with me! If you need some motivation, check out my first assignment here, and the result here.

GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT #01 / CEREMONY - ANGDOO.COM/BLOG

Hello you. Do you remember GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT, an ongoing personal project I’ve made up for myself (and for you to join)? Well, if you don’t remember, here’s the project introduction to refresh your memory : )

I received my first assignment from Richard Niessen a few months ago. The assignment was to create a ceremony for a person who is really important to me. The project took me way longer than what I’ve anticipated. Way too long. But I had my reasons, and for that, I buried it for a long while until I dug it back up a few days ago to finally finish it.

And here it is, a ceremony for my dad to celebrate his “detachment” to worldly things. I’ve document the ceremony in a stop motion film.

Here’s the link to the work in progress I’ve posted before.

You are welcome to join the project and invent a ceremony for someone very special. For whom would you make a ceremony? Make sure to share with me after please : )

Now I have to search for another inspiring person to give me the second assignment! I’ll let you know as soon as I receive my second assignment ; )

GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT #01 / WIP - ANGDOO.COM/BLOG

I would like to share my work-in-progress of the first “GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT” project. If you don’t know what “GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT” project is, it is an ongoing personal project I’ve made up, and you can read more about it here.

So the first assignment was given by Richard Niessen, who assigned me to create a ceremony for a person who is very important to me and also greatly influenced me. So I’ve decided to create a ceremony for my dad. To be specific, I wanted to celebrate his ability to detach, one of his many characteristics I look up to and would like to take on one day.

More I thought of this invented ceremony, it felt like a calm meditative event. So I collected stones, painted them and balanced them into several sculptures. And I documented this ceremony in a stop motion film.

The very first GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT, an ongoing personal project I just started (you can read about it in my previous post if you haven’t already), was given by Richard Niessen, a Dutch graphic designer I met while we both were invited to give a week long workshop at ECV in Paris. While this was the very first workshop I’ve given in stop motion, Richard was a veteran who often gave workshops all over the world. During that week, I was very much intrigued by his workshop, which is not only about visual, but greatly based on research and content, and by his work.

I had an opportunity to visit his lofty and cozy studio, which he shares with his wife, Esther de Vries (also a talented graphic designer with great body of works), a few months back while I was visiting Amsterdam. I got to see his past works in posters and books, and some sketches of his upcoming (now ended) exhibition at Une Saison Graphique in Le Havre, France.

He also shared some of the assignments he has given in his past workshops, and I thought to myself that I’d love to have taken those workshops. Thus, on my way back from his studio, GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT was born. And who is a better person to ask for the very first assignment than Richard : )

Here are some of his works.

Upon asking, Richard gladly gave me an assignment.

As an ASSIGNMENT, I would like you to make a ceremony for someone who is R-E-A-L-L-Y important to you, someone you have learnt a lot from, who means a lot to you. in ‘normal’ life you never have the time to think about this, but now it’s time to honour him or her. Think of decisive moment and make it more universal and turn it into a ritual to translate this moment or that what he/she means to you… translate it into a symbolic or metaphorical act to commemorate the fact that you are you because of the influence and the help of others.

DURATION the ritiual itself should last only a few minutes I guess. You can work on it for one week. There is one moment when you will explain me what you would like to do and I will give you tips and tricks. You will show me the final result, that if you like it, can be repeated by you each year!

So this is why I’ve been stone hunting these days. As I mentioned before, feel free to join in, share your ideas and do this assignment with me : ) I will share my work-in-progress too very soon!

logo GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT is an ongoing personal project I’ve invented. I’ve briefly mentioned about the project on the previous post, and I thought I should elaborate a bit more so that anyone who is interested can join in also.

I thought of this project firstly because I often kick myself for not doing personal projects. I believe most of the creatives are also kicking themselves in the butt for not making enough personal projects, unless you are a super, creative, self-confident, strong minded, solid, determined human being. Well, I am easily distracted, self-doubting, overwhelmed, often scared human being when it comes to personal projects. There are many reasons to why it is so damn hard to realize a personal project, but it boils down to this (at least for me): The openness and limitlessness are the biggest mind blocks.

So GIVE ME AN ASSIGNMENT is my attempt to resolve this. I am going to ask people whom I admire to give me assignments. I’ve created an opening letter with a project’s guideline to be sent to the possible project givers. It is a loose guideline with a few strict rules. It is loose that the output of the assignment can be in any form – film, animation, photograph, object, sound, etc. I’ve made this mostly for myself so that I take this project more seriously with a commitment. You can read the whole opening letter here.

I hope this ongoing project will help me to produce more and more often to practice and experiment my craft as a filmmaker and a creator. Moreover this will give me an excuse to contact those creatives I’ve admired for so long :) And get some great assignments along the way.

I’ll share the assignments here on the blog as I receive them. If you are like me and have a hard time coming up with and realizing your personal project, you are more than welcome to do these assignments with me :)

I already received the first assignment which I will post here tomorrow!

So who’s in?
